Geometric Terms

Vertices, Edges and Faces

Vertex, Edge and Face
A vertex is a corner
An edge joins one vertex with another
A face is an individual surface
cube [countable]
1 a solid object with six equal square sides:

NameEqual edge-lengths?Equal angles?Right angles?
CubeYesYesYes
the cube of something
the number you get when you multiply a number by itself twice, for example 4 x 4 x 4 = 64, so the cube of 4 is 64
ShapeTermDefinition
perpendicular line segmentsTwo line segments which cross to form 90 degree angles.
right angleA 90 degree angle.
equilateral triangleA triangle with all sides equal and all angles equal.
scalene triangleA triangle having three unequal sides and angles.
vertexThe intersection point of two sides of a plane figure.
right triangleA triangle with one internal angle equal to 90 degrees.
pentagonA polygon with 5 sides and 5 angles.
squareA rectangle having all four sides of equal length.
intersecting line segmentsLine segments that cross each other.
acute angleAn angle less than 90 degrees but greater than 0 degrees.
chordThe line segment between two points on a given curve.
radiusA straight line extending from the center of a circle or sphere to the circumference or surface.
line segmentOne part of a line.
lineA continuous extent of length.
pointA position in space.
parallelogramA quadrilateral having both pairs of opposite sides parallel to each other.(Note: squares and rectangles are also quadrilaterals.)
rectangleA parallelogram having four right angles.(Note: a square is also a rectangle.)
rhombusAn equilateral parallelogram having oblique angles.
parallel line segmentsLine segments that do not intersect.
quadrilateralA polygon with four sides.(Note: squares, rectangles and trapezoids are also quadrilaterals.)
octagonA polygon having eight angles and eight sides.
circleA closed plane curve consisting of all points at a given distance from a point within it called the center.
trapezoidA quadrilateral plane figure having two parallel and two nonparallel sides.
rayThe part of a straight line considered as originating at a point on the line and as extending in one direction from that point.
closed curveA curve that is continuous and has endpoints that meet at the same point.
isosceles triangleA triangle which has two sides equal.
hexagonA polygon having six sides and six angles.
diameterA straight line passing through the center of a circle or sphere and meeting the circumference or surface at each end.
